Looking for a sign…
Look to the Cross!
Scripture: John 6
29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?

“But officer, I didn’t see the sign.” After being pulled over for running a stop sign this is often our lame excuse. So, too, this is our excuse with God. We were looking for a sign from God. We prayed and prayed expecting God to respond to our every whim, or when we have gotten into trouble and expect God to help us out of our mess. All we need do is look to the Cross for the sign for which we are looking.

There is a story about a man who was stranded on his roof as the flood waters got higher and higher. He prayed mightily to God for a rescue as only God could give. Then a canoe came by and offered him a ride. “No
thanks, God will save me!” The canoe left and then a powerboat pulled up with a rescue offer. Again, the man said that God would save him. As the waters continued to rise, a helicopter came and lowered a rescue
harness. Again, the man refused the help, waiting for God to  miraculously save him. As the helicopter flew off, the waters rose, and the man drowned. As he stood in front of God the man asked, “why didn’t you answer my prayers and save me from drowning?” God responded, “I sent you a canoe, a powerboat, and a helicopter.
What more did you expect?”

Don’t we miss the sign(s) that God leaves for us. When we are lonely, look to the Cross. No one has ever been more alone than Jesus at that moment. Feeling persecuted on your job or your life, look to the Cross. No one was persecuted more than Jesus. Feeling like everyone is laughing at you and your friends have deserted you, look to the Cross. No one has ever been mocked and betrayed like Jesus. Whatever your problem, Christ has been there before you. We are not alone, persecuted, mocked or betrayed. Christ does answer our prayers,
just look at the Cross. It is the only sign that we need. Amen.
Dear Lord Jesus remind us to look to the Cross no matter what our problem is. Refresh our minds as to what you did for all of creation when you were on that Cross. May we remember all that you sacrificed. All the humiliation and betrayal you faced. How alone and exposed you were. May we look to the Cross and see the Sign of your loving mercy & forgiveness. The sign that says we are never alone for Christ is at our side. Amen.
